Triumphant Ealey Consolidates Shot Put Supremacy at World Championships

Springfield, Illinois native Chase Ealey cemented her status as the world’s premier women’s shot put talent, delivering a commanding gold medal performance at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest 2023.

Just a year after her historic breakthrough victory on home soil, the 29-year-old thrower once again showcased her dominance, joining an elite group of multiple world champions in the event.

Ealey wasted no time asserting her authority, opening with a towering 20.35m effort that put her instantly in the lead. The chasing pack could not close the gap, as the American consistently found the sweet spot to extend her advantage.

While Canada’s Sarah Mitton mounted a spirited challenge, improving to a 20.08m season’s best in the fifth round, Ealey responded emphatically, unleashing a 20.43m throw to seal the gold medal with room to spare.

In a tight battle for bronze, the legendary Gong Lijiao of China edged out fellow Asian competitor Auriol Dongmo of Portugal, with her superior second-best throw securing the final podium spot.

“It’s even more satisfying than last year because this year I’ve struggled to get my technique sorted and get everything right,” Ealey reflected after the triumph. “So, for it to come together at the right time is perfect.”

The American’s distinctive appearance, complete with thick purple eye shadow and intricate face paint, only added to the drama as she cemented her status as the undisputed queen of the women’s shot put.
