Emerging Talent: Maddison-Lee Wesche Continues New Zealand’s Shot Put Legacy

Auckland, June 13, 2022 – As two-time Olympic champion Dame Val Adams transitioned into retirement, New Zealand has found her successor in the rising shot put star, Maddison-Lee Wesche.

At just 23 years old, the young athlete has already made a significant impact on the sport. Wesche won her first national senior title in 2017, followed by Oceania junior and senior crowns that same year. The following year, she added a world junior title to her growing list of accolades.

Hailing from Auckland, the 1.74m tall Wesche has been mentored by renowned coach Mike Schofield and has steadily improved her personal best, currently standing at an impressive 18.98m. With a bright future ahead, the talented shot putter is poised to carry on New Zealand’s rich tradition in the event.
